Personal Trainer for Mercer Island: Train for the Root Cause, Not Just the Sweat

If you live on Mercer Island, you already take your health seriously. You want a personal trainer who does the same. I am not the guy who counts your reps and calls it a day. I look at why your back keeps tightening up, why your energy drops at 3pm, and why the same shoulder has bothered you for two years. That is the work I do.

In-person at the Renton studio, a short hop across I-90, or online from wherever you train.

I am Tyler Greer. I run Shape & Strength Fitness out of a private studio in Renton, and I coach a handful of Mercer Island clients who were tired of the big-box gym model. Some drive over for in-person sessions. Some train with me online from their own home gym. Both work, and I will be honest with you about which one fits your life on the call.

Let me say the important thing up front. I do not have a location on Mercer Island. My studio is in Renton, at 2525 Aberdeen Ave NE, and for most of the island that is a ten to fifteen minute drive across I-90 depending on where you start. If that drive is not something you want to do a few times a week, online coaching gives you the same assessment, the same custom program, and the same check-ins from home.

Why a big-box gym rarely fixes the real problem

Most gyms sell you access and hope. You walk in, you guess at a workout, and if something hurts you either push through it or quit. A trainer on the floor might count your sets, but almost none of them start by asking why your body moves the way it does.

I trained as a Master CHEK Practitioner, a corrective exercise and whole-body health credential held by fewer than two hundred coaches worldwide. I am also certified in Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. What that means for you is simple. Before I write a single exercise, I look at how you actually move, how you sleep, what you eat, and how much stress you are carrying. Pain and plateaus usually trace back to one of those, and treating the symptom while ignoring the cause is why so many people stay stuck.

If you have ever wondered why your lower back flares up after a day at your desk, or why the round-shoulder, forward-head posture from screen time keeps coming back, those are patterns I screen for and coach directly. Read more on what drives it in my piece on upper crossed syndrome.

The specific problems I help Mercer Island clients with

  • Nagging pain that follows you into every workout. A cranky knee, a tight low back, a shoulder that never quite loosens. I find the movement fault behind it and coach around it, not through it.
  • Desk-and-commute posture. Long hours at a screen change how you stand and breathe. Corrective work resets that before we load anything heavy.
  • Strength that stopped moving. You put in the effort and nothing changed. Usually the fix is not more effort. It is correcting what is limiting you.
  • Feeling tired, wired, or foggy. When sleep, stress, and food are off, no program feels good. This is where my nutrition and root-cause background does real work. If this sounds like you, start with why you might feel tired even after a full night of sleep.
  • Starting or restarting after 40, 50, or beyond. Your body does not bounce back like it used to, so we build strength on a foundation that holds. Here is my take on why strength training matters more after 40.

How working together actually goes

1

We talk on a free discovery call

Twenty to thirty minutes. You tell me what is going on, I ask questions, and we decide together whether in-person in Renton or online is the better fit. No pressure, no pitch you have to sit through.

2

I assess before I prescribe

We screen your posture, movement, history, sleep, and nutrition. This is the step almost every gym skips, and it is the reason your program will fit your body instead of a template.

3

You get a program built for you

Phase 1 is my Rebuild work: correct what is off, restore the movement you are missing, then build real strength. In person or online, you train the plan and I coach you through it.

4

We re-check and keep going

After the rebuild phase, plenty of clients move into Sustain to hold what they built. That is an Alumni membership at $275 a month, or single sessions at $175 when you want them. We talk pricing plainly on the call.

Two coaches, one honest approach

Tyler Greer

Master CHEK Practitioner and FDN coach. I focus on root-cause investigation and corrective exercise, using the movement, nutrition, sleep, and mindset lens to find what is really holding you back.

Katie Milne

Movement coach and in-person personal trainer. Katie brings Pilates-inspired strength work that builds control and stability, a good fit if you want to move well and feel steadier on your feet.

Between us, we cover in-person training at the Renton studio and online coaching worldwide, corrective exercise for pain and posture, and strength work for every age and starting point. Curious how having two coaches in your corner changes things? I wrote about the two-coach advantage.

Not sure where to start?

Book a free discovery call and we will figure it out together. If you would rather poke around first, take one of my free self-checks. One is a quick movement and strength screen. The other is a root-cause health screen that flags what might be draining your energy.

Common questions from Mercer Island

Do you have a gym on Mercer Island?

No. My only studio is in Renton at 2525 Aberdeen Ave NE, which is about a ten to fifteen minute drive from most of Mercer Island across I-90. If that drive works for you, we train in person. If it does not, I coach Mercer Island clients online with the same assessment and custom program.

Is online coaching really as good as in person?

For most people, yes. The assessment, the custom program, and the check-ins are the same. What changes is that you train in your own space on your own schedule, and I coach your form and progress over video. Plenty of clients get their full result this way. On the call I will tell you honestly which format suits your goals.

What makes this different from a regular personal trainer?

I start with an assessment instead of a workout. As a Master CHEK Practitioner and FDN coach, I screen how you move and look at sleep, stress, and nutrition before I build anything. The goal is to correct the cause of your pain or plateau, not just tire you out. When something is outside my scope, I coach within a screen-and-refer approach and work alongside your physician or physical therapist.

Do you train beginners and people coming back from injury?

Yes, and honestly those are the people the assessment-first approach helps most. If you are cleared to train but unsure how to rebuild, I restore movement and stability before adding load, and I coordinate with your provider when it makes sense.

What does it cost?

Everyone starts with the Phase 1 Rebuild coaching, priced on the discovery call once I understand your situation. After that, the Sustain phase is an Alumni membership at $275 a month, or single sessions at $175 each, with a re-assessment at $300 when it is time to reset the plan. No surprises, and no commitment to book the call.
